Brightgrove at IATA WDS 2026: Scaling the Global Data Bus

Brightgrove recently joined aviation leaders at the IATA World Data Symposium (WDS) 2026. This event showed how airlines are moving away from legacy systems and toward a future run on fast, clear data.

As a member of IATA’s Strategic Partnership Program, we showcased the results of a year-long PoC called Project Gaia (Global Data Bus) along with other industry experts. The PoC introduces a new industry-wide model that replaces fragmented, separate connections with one secure, cloud-ready platform.

Built on Apache Kafka, it offers a shared layer for data that is reliable, scalable, and keeps everything in the correct order. Using a "Secure by Design" approach, participants lock their own data before sending it, so the platform can route information without ever seeing the private content inside. Finally, a central registry manages identities and security keys, creating a foundation of trust for everyone in the network. In a real-world test with Qatar Airways and LAX Airport, the project proved it could handle important updates, like gate changes and baggage info, in seconds.

Beyond Project Gaia (Global Data Bus), several other initiatives at WDS 2026 signaled about the shifts in the industry:

  • Project Carina (AI Agent Multilateral Interoperability): This project deploys AI agents to act as an "interoperability fabric" that automates multi-carrier cargo coordination, such as interline bookings and disruption management. By acting as digital diplomats, these AI agents allow airlines to seamlessly collaborate without needing to overhaul their legacy systems, eliminating slow, manual email-driven processes.

  • Digital Identity Verification in the Distribution Process: This initiative integrates verifiable digital credentials into airline distribution channels to cryptographically authenticate travel agencies, travel agents, and end customers. This framework enhances ecosystem transparency, reduces fraud risks, and improves passenger data accuracy.

  • Contactless Travel at Scale: This project envisions a queue-free, paperless airport journey where passengers use secure digital wallets and biometrics instead of physical passports and boarding passes. Built on decentralized architecture and privacy-by-design principles, the system allows passengers to globally verify their identity prior to arrival while maintaining total control over their personal data through selective disclosure.

The event ended with a lot of hope. By using these new tools, the aviation world can save money and work better together. Most importantly, it will make travel easier and better for billions of people every year. The future of flying is connected, fast, and secure.
